Big Changes are Coming to the Co-Op!

Happy New Year!

The new year often brings new changes in life, and it’s no exception at the Dexter Co-Op in 2023.

The teachers we have grown to love so much are both moving on at the end of the school year! We want to congratulate both of them on beyond successful tenures as they set off on their new adventures. Miss Holly is looking forward to “retirement” and Miss Jessica is moving forward in her career now that her own kids are in school full time. You can read more about what they will be up to below.

While the Co-Op board has the daunting task of filling these amazing shoes, we are sure we will find two teachers ready to make a difference in lives of the co-op kids. We are excited that this timing allows us the opportunity to hire two new teachers as a team, bringing with them new ideas and collaboration.

Rest assured, the Co-Op remains committed to providing the best developmental experience for the children while continuing to be guided by our mission: To provide a preschool where young children engage in group experiences before entering the elementary school, where emphasis is placed on the growth and development of the child and parent together, and where cooperation and exchange of ideas among members is encouraged.

And now, a message from our wonderful teachers:

Holly Baker, the 4-year-olds Teacher

“Just when I think I have learned the way to live, life changes.” -Hugh Prather

I knew I wanted to be a teacher when I was in the 2nd grade and have been pursuing that career for the last many years. When my children attended the Dexter Co-Op, I told the teacher at the time (Mrs. Joan) that I would love that job if it ever became available. Luckily, 6 years ago, that is what happened. The Co-Op was just moving into the new space at Peace Lutheran and I was thrilled about my new position.

Fast forward 6 years: the Co-Op has weathered the Covid pandemic shutdown and rebounded with strong enrollment due to the steadfast leadership from the Parent Board and active participation of supportive families. My life has changed with all my children off to college and careers, and I have a new role as grandmother (I am called Oma, not the G word). With these changes, I realize I need more flexibility to manage the different parts. That being said, I have decided to leave my position as the 4-year-old teacher at the Co-Op. This is not “retirement” for me but a new path to explore. I hope to remain active in the Dexter Co-Op community as a Paid Assist or Substitute Teacher or in whatever role I can be of assistance. The Coop is a vital part of our community, and I am happy to do anything I am able to ensure its continued success as a creative learning space for children and their families.

I hold all the children and families I have come to know in a special place in my heart. I know our paths will cross as we are out in the Dexter community. Thank you for the wonderful experience as a Co-Op teacher!

Jessica Flaherty, the 3-year-olds teacher

I have been at Dexter Co-Op in the 3-year-old teacher position for the last 7 years. It has been such a joy to be part of this school and community. I loved forging relationships with all the children and the wonderful families who support them. The Co-Op gave me great freedom to create a curriculum and classroom culture that worked for me. I loved having a very active role in shaping the philosophy and mission of the school, working with the board on processes, fundraising, and recruitment of new families.

It was such a gift as a passionate teacher but also a devoted mom of two to find a job where I could be both in the classroom and at home with them as they grew. The Co-Op provides great work-life balance and flexibility. I am leaving the Co-Op after this school year to further my career in early intervention and to begin full time teaching again. My children are in school full time now and the time has come to focus on taking more on in my career. It is very bittersweet for me to be leaving the Co-Op. I love this school and the people who work so hard to make it a success (children and adults alike!) A part of my heart will always be here, but I look forward to blessing someone else with this wonderful opportunity!
